The slowest pace
The slowest pace
"Brother, why are you nervous again?" Gwen suddenly stopped and stared at him with his arms in his arms. "You look like you are handling a case."
Lynn was amused by this sentence, "No, I'm just taking a look."
"Look at it?" Gwen snorted half-believingly, "I think you are too cautious. Please, this is Brooklyn, not a place where bad people are hidden in your cases."
"Okay, Gwen, don't scold your brother." George spoke to help Lynn. "He has been an agent for so many years, and he must be used to it. You have to give him more patience."
"Well, okay." Gwen curled his lips and continued to move forward.
Just then, Lynn suddenly heard a familiar laugh. He turned his head subconsciously and saw an unexpected face - Kate Miller.
Kate was wearing a gray windbreaker with his hands in his pockets, standing in front of a cafe on the street, talking to a man who looked like a reporter. Her smile still had the kind of unyielding sharpness, but there was a little more relaxation between her eyebrows and eyes.
"It's her." Lin Neng whispered, his steps paused slightly.
Gwen looked at him as he immediately became energetic, "Wow, brother, who is that? She looks very beautiful."
"A person I know." Lynn replied simply, but there was an unconsciously a hint of complex emotions in his tone.
George also looked at Kate and raised his eyebrows slightly, "She doesn't look like an ordinary person. Is it your colleague?"
"No." Lynn shook her head, "She is a reporter, we had some...intersection before."
"Reporter?" Gwen's eyes lit up instantly, "Brother, don't tell me what special relationship you have with reporters? Such people are very good at digging secrets."
Lynn ignored his sister's teasing. He just stood there, his eyes involuntarily following Kate's figure. When Kate said goodbye to the reporter and turned to leave, her eyes accidentally swept to Lynn.
Kate stopped, and obviously she didn't expect to meet Lynn here either. After a moment of surprise, she showed a meaningful smile and walked towards him.
"Linn." She stood in front of him, smiling calmly, but a hint of curiosity flashed in her eyes, "I didn't expect to meet you here."
"Kate." Lynn nodded, his tone was plain, but his eyes were firmly locked on her, "How are you doing recently?"
"What else can it do? It has something to do with your FBI." Kate wrapped his hands around his tone, with a hint of joking in his tone, "But my life is a little better than you, look at you so tired."
"Yes, he's tired, but he's still handsome." Gwen suddenly interrupted, his eyes sweeping back and forth between Lynn and Kate, his eyes full of teasing.
Kate looked down at Gwen, the smile on his face softened a little, "Are you Lynn's sister?"
"Yes, I'm Gwen." Gwen stretched out his hand openly, "Are you my brother's friend?"
"It can be considered." Kate shook her hand and turned to look at Lynn. "But you didn't tell me that you have such a cute sister."
Lynn sighed and whispered, "She is not as cute as you think."
Gwen stuck out his tongue and looked at Kate, "We're going to have supper, do you want to be together?"
"Gwen--" Lynn tried to stop him, but Gwen interrupted him immediately, "Don't be so stingy, brother, he's your friend. Besides, Dad, don't you?"
George smiled slightly and nodded, "We can add an extra seat. Of course, welcome if this lady wants."
Kate obviously didn't expect to be invited, but her eyes stayed on Lynn's face for a moment, then a relaxed smile appeared, "Since you invite me kindly, I'm not polite."
Lynn rubbed his eyebrows helplessly, but in the end he didn't say anything else. The three continued to walk towards the restaurant, while Kate followed them silently, chatting with Gwen occasionally.
The lights in the restaurant are soft and the air is filled with the aroma of food. Gwen and Kate had a great chat, from school performances to news gossip, and even boldly asked a few questions about Kate’s work experience.
"So you're a reporter who specializes in writing those dangerous news?" Gwen opened his eyes wide, obviously curious about Kate's career.
"So," Kate replied with a smile. "My job is to dig out the truth, no matter how difficult those truths are to be accepted."
"Sounds cool!" Gwen's eyes flashed with excitement, "It sounds much more interesting than my brother's job."
Lynn raised an eyebrow and said lightly, "If you really know what she has experienced, you won't say that."
Kate glanced at him, a sly smile raised at the corner of his mouth, "Linn is right, Gwen. My job is indeed dangerous and stressful. But sometimes, revealing the truth is something worth taking risks in itself .”
Gwen nodded thoughtfully, while George smiled slightly and said, "Anyway, both of you are amazing. Being able to work for justice is always an admirable thing."
Kate took a sip of wine and looked at Lynn with a meaningful smile, "It sounds like your family is very supportive of your work."
Lynn didn't answer, just lowered his head and cut a bite of the steak.
The lights in the restaurant are warm yellow and soft, and the candles on the table are jumping, making the whole atmosphere look extremely warm. Gwen was obviously completely immersed in her own "question" - she had never been as enthusiastic as she was tonight, looking quietly in the direction of Kate and Lynn while cutting the steak, a sly shimmering in her eyes The light.
"So, Kate." Gwen finally put down his knife and fork and spoke casually, "How long have you known my brother?"
Kate was slightly stunned, but then smiled, "It's not long, just a few months? We met because of some...well, at work."
"Oh, is that?" A teasing voice flashed in Gwen's eyes, "That must be a very special 'working thing', otherwise how could my brother remember that someone was so clear?"
Lynn put down the cup in his hand and twitched his eyes, "Gwen, I remember everyone I have come into contact with, this is my work habit."
"Yes, yes." Gwen rolled his eyes as if he was exaggerating. "But you never mention others, Kate is an exception."
"Because she is a reporter." Lynn answered neatly, but with a hint of vigilance in his tone, he clearly felt Gwen's "intention".
"A reporter?" Gwen raised his eyebrows, "This is quite interesting. Kate, do you think that people like my brother are actually very difficult to get close to the media?"
Kate narrowed his eyes and looked at Lynn, seemingly amused, "Well... it's true. He's hard to get close to, especially when you're trying to ask some questions that make him uncomfortable."
"What's the problem?" Gwen's tone was full of curiosity.
"For example," Kate put down the cutlery, pretended to think seriously, and then said in a teasing tone, "Are you always used to taking on everything alone? Are you afraid to get others close to you?"
Lynn frowned, but did not immediately refute. He looked at Kate with a slightly helpless expression, "You are analyzing me again."
Kate shrugged, "Professional habits, don't mind."
Gwen couldn't help laughing as he watched the interaction between the two, "Oh my God, you two are quite tacit! Lynn, it's so abnormal that you didn't fight back directly."
"Why should I fight back?" Lin En raised an eyebrow, "What she said was just some superficial observations."
"Wow, 'shallow'." Kate pretended to be offended, but the smile on his lips could not be hidden, "Well, Agent Lynn, I will try to go deeper next time."
George listened next to him, with a meaningful smile on his face. He didn't interrupt the conversation, but just cut his steak quietly, looking quite enjoyable.
"But seriously." Gwen suddenly put away his joking tone and glanced back and forth between Kate and Lynn seriously, "I think you are quite a match."
As soon as this sentence was spoken, the atmosphere on the table suddenly became subtle.
Kate was slightly stunned, then lowered his head to hide his expression, "Gwen, you are really good at joking."
"I'm not kidding." Gwen said seriously, "The chemistry between you two is too obvious. Brother, don't you think it yourself?"
Lynn's expression froze for a moment, then he coughed lightly, "Gwen, have you watched too many TV series?"
"It has nothing to do with the TV series, I just have eyes." Gwen smiled sly, "Don't tell me you didn't feel it at all."
Kate looked up and glanced at Lin Neng, with a hint of embarrassment, but more curious. Lynn deliberately avoided her gaze, reached out to pick up the water cup and took a sip, trying to hide his discomfort.
"Your brother probably has too strong professional habits, and even faces feelings like handling cases, cold." Kate said pretending to be relaxed, trying to easily shift the topic.
"Oh, no, no, he is not cold, he is just stupid." Gwen ruthlessly slandered, "He is not good at expressing his feelings, and always pretends to be particularly tough, but in fact, he is more serious in his heart. Everyone is nervous."
"Enough, Gwen." Lynn finally couldn't help but whisper, but his tone was more helpless than angry.
"Oh, don't be so serious." Gwen blinked and turned to Kate, "But seriously, Kate, have you ever considered dating my brother? Although he is stubborn, he is actually a good person."
Kate's smile froze, she obviously didn't expect Gwen to ask so directly. She hesitated for a moment before she spoke, "Linn is a very amazing person. I respect him very much, but-"
"But what?" Gwen asked.
"But he may not be suitable for dates." Kate took a sip of wine and looked at Lynn without a look.
"Why?" Gwen was like a curious child, unwilling to let go of any details.
Lynn finally couldn't help it. He put down the cup in his hand, his voice low and firm, "Gwen, enough."
Gwen curled his lips, as if he was a little unwilling to accept it, but he still didn't continue talking. She lowered her head and cut a steak and muttered, "Okay OK, you two are so boring."
Kate forced a smile, but her eyes still fell on Lynn. She knew that although Gwen's words were jokes, they accidentally hit something she didn't want to face. Although Lynn's expression seemed calm, she could feel that there seemed to be some complicated emotions hidden in his heart.
Although the atmosphere of the dinner was a little broken by Gwen's "match-up", it quickly returned to normal. George shifted the subject in due time and began to talk about some relaxing things with Kate, while Lynn fell into a rare quiet. He lowered his head and cut his steak, occasionally looking up at Kate, a trace of softness that he hadn't even realized was flashing in his eyes.
After dinner, the few people walked out of the restaurant together, and the wind on the street became colder than when it came. Gwen looked at the corner not far away and suddenly said excitedly, "I want to buy a dessert! There is a delicious restaurant there!"
"Gwen." George shook his head, "Didn't you just finished a meal?"
"Dessert and supper are two different things!" Gwen pulled George to the dessert shop without saying a word, leaving Lynn and Kate standing at the door of the restaurant.
Lynn looked at their backs and sighed helplessly, "She is always like this, she will never be able to use up her energy."
"She's pretty cute." Kate smiled softly, put his hands in his pockets, and looked at Lynn with his head, "But what she said... are you very uncomfortable?"
Lynn was silent for a moment before whispering, “She likes teasing people so much sometimes.”
"So, do you think she's teasing you?" Kate's tone was a little provocative.
Lynn turned to look at her with a deep look, "What do you think?"
Kate was slightly stunned, but then laughed, "I think she just hopes you have a bit of a normal emotional life, rather than always letting yourself live in those dangers and pressures."
Lynn didn't answer, his eyes crossed Kate and landed at the end of the street. At that moment, he seemed to be in a certain meditation, and Kate looked at him quietly, feeling for the first time that the cold agent in front of him might be more complicated than she had imagined.
After dinner, the streets were still filled with the warm atmosphere unique to Brooklyn. Neon lights flashed with faint lights in the hazy night, and the wind brushed across the face with a little coldness. George took Gwen in front, the father and daughter were talking and laughing. Gwen took a dessert in his hand, took a bite happily, and looked back at Lynn and Kate.
"Brother, since Kate and us just happened to meet, you can send her home." Gwen said lightly, but the familiar "matching light" flashed in his eyes, which made Lynn feel a warning.
"Gwen, I think Kate can go home by himself." Lynn's tone was filled with resistance.
But Kate smiled, put his hand in his pocket in the windbreaker, and deliberately added a fire, "Actually, if you are willing to give it to me, I won't refuse."
Gwen immediately smiled proudly and gave Kate a thumbs up, "It's settled! Lynn, don't make excuses. You look like you are busy all day long, and you finally have the opportunity to relax, but you're better than Take two more steps to relax.”
"Relax?" Lynn frowned, but facing Gwen's expression of sure victory, he seemed unnecessary to refute again, so he had to sigh helplessly, "Okay, but this time."
Kate looked at him with a smile, "Then I'll bother you, Agent Lynn."
Gwen waved proudly, "Good night, Kate! Brother, don't always have a cold face on the road, relax!"
Lynn looked down at Gwen's back as he walked away, his mouth twitched, but finally looked at Kate, "Do you live far?"
"It's okay, it's not far." Kate smiled slightly and took a step, "Let's go."
The streets became quiet, and only the occasionally passing headlights made traces of light in the night. The two walked side by side, but neither spoke. Lynn's eyes subconsciously swept around, his pace steady and relaxed, but he still maintained a trace of professional vigilance in his heart.
Kate seemed to notice his nervousness and deliberately broke the silence, "Are you always like this? Even walking seems to be on a mission."
"Habit problem." Lynn responded calmly, his eyes still scanning the surroundings, "Occupational disease cannot be changed."
"Well, no wonder Gwen said you need to relax." Kate chuckled softly, putting his hands in his trench coat pocket, looking at him, "But seriously, I rarely see you relaxing. You usually have a chance to see you. What can make you feel alert?”
"Is it okay to sleep?" Lin En pursed her lips, her tone a little ridiculous.
Kate couldn't help laughing, "That's really relaxing."
Lynn glanced at her slightly, "What about you? You always look energetic, as if nothing can stop you."
"Oh, I'll stop." Kate's smile grew stronger, his eyes jokingly, "For example, walking with you now is the slowest pace of my day."
Lynn's mouth twitched almost imperceptibly, but he didn't answer any more. He and Kate walked a few blocks away from the main road, and the surrounding buildings began to appear dilapidated and quiet. Kate pointed to an apartment building ahead, "Arrival, right there."
Lin En looked up at the four-story red brick building. The street lights downstairs were dim and shaking, and the light was not very bright. His eyes swept around, and he retracted his gaze after confirming that there was no suspicious movement, "Is this where you live?"
"That's right." Kaite nodded, then paused slightly, with a little joking meaning, "What? Doesn't it seem safe?"
"It's okay." Lynn's voice was low and calm, "but if I were you, I would add an extra surveillance camera at the door."
Kate smiled and shook his head, "Lynn, you have to learn to trust that life is not full of danger every second."
"But for some, it's really." Lynn looked at her seriously, with a deep look. "Especially reporters like you always like to dig up the unsettling truths."
