Chapter 2, Class 5
Chapter 2, Class 5
The classroom was bustling with noise.
The newly promoted genin, who had just received their headbands, were excitedly discussing their upcoming class assignments.
For most people, this is not just about grouping up, but about deciding who they will spend the next few years with.
Being assigned a powerful Jonin teacher or a teammate with a bloodline limit means a significant increase in survival rate in this era of war.
Nishikawa Tetsu sat in a corner by the window, twirling a pen in his hand. Although his gaze was fixed on the rain outside the window, his ears were filtering out the noisy sounds in the classroom.
"I heard that many of the instructors leading this team are elite Chunin who have just returned from the front lines."
"If only it were Lord Hatake or Lord Orochimaru..."
"Stop dreaming, they're all on the front lines in the Land of Rain."
Che's eyes flickered slightly.
Based on his memories from his previous life, Minato Namikaze was indeed Jiraiya's disciple.
But at this point in time, the Second Shinobi World War was raging. As one of the frontline commanders, did Jiraiya really have time to specially run back to the village to train a few rookies who had just graduated?
"Quiet!"
Teacher Dahei walked in with the class assignment list, his face serious, and the classroom instantly fell silent.
"Given the tense situation at the front, after this division of platoons, you will not have a break-in period and will be directly assigned to logistics or reconnaissance units to go to the border."
One sentence turned the children, who had just been excited, pale.
There are no drills, no transition missions; stepping outside is like entering a battlefield.
Big Black started reading the list.
"First class..."
"Second class..."
As each name was called, some cheered while others were disheartened.
Soon, the list reached Nishikawa Toru.
"Class 5." Teacher Daikoku paused, his gaze sweeping over Nishikawa Tetsu in the corner, then looking at Namikaze Minato in the first row, his expression becoming somewhat strange.
"Nishikawa Toru, Namikaze Minato."
The whole class erupted in uproar.
One is an ordinary character whose scores are mediocre except for the written test and whose chakra reserves are at the bottom; the other is a commoner genius who has broken all records and is hailed as a once-in-a-decades talent.
Putting these two in the same group is an extreme combination.
Minato Namikaze turned his head and gave Tetsu Nishikawa a bright smile, seemingly very satisfied with his teammate.
Being assigned to the same team as the future Fourth Hokage is not a good thing, Nishikawa Tetsu thought to himself, but he still nodded politely to Minato.
"And..." Teacher Daikoku looked at the notes on the list, swallowed hard, "Your instructor, the Jonin, is—Lord Jiraiya."
"boom!"
The classroom was in complete chaos.
"Lord Jiraiya?! The Hokage's apprentice!"
"My God, those two guys are incredibly lucky!"
"Why should Nishikawa Toru, that bottom-of-the-class student, get into this elite class?"
Jealous, envious, and shocked gazes shot towards the corner like arrows.
However, Teacher Dahei's next sentence was like a bucket of cold water, extinguishing everyone's enthusiasm.
"However, Jiraiya-sama is currently on the front lines in the Land of Rain and cannot return to the village. Therefore, the village has assigned a temporary captain to escort you safely to the front-line camp."
Temporary team leader?
Just as everyone was wondering what was going on, the classroom door was suddenly pulled open.
A chilly, damp air, mixed with a faint smell of blood, wafted into the warm classroom.
A boy of about fifteen or sixteen years old was standing at the door.
He wore a dark blue turtleneck sweater, over which was a green tactical vest with numerous pockets and obvious signs of repair. His black hair was somewhat disheveled, wet from the rain and plastered to his forehead, and his eyes were not the usual black, but rather—
scarlet.
Three black magatama slowly rotated in his blood-red pupils, radiating a suffocating sense of oppression.
Uchiha Fugaku.
Although he had not yet become the future head of the Uchiha clan, his arrogance as the eldest son of a powerful family and his battle-hardened aura were enough to make these newly graduated fledglings tremble with fear.
The classroom fell into a deathly silence.
Fugaku Uchiha glanced around, his gaze not lingering on the trembling children, but finally locking onto Minato Namikaze and Tetsu Nishikawa.
"Fifth class, come with me."
His voice was cold, filled with impatience.
……
The rooftop of the Ninja Academy.
The rain was still falling, making a pattering sound as it hit the railing.
Fugaku Uchiha stood with his arms crossed, leaning against the railing. His Sharingan was closed and had returned to its black state, but his furrowed brows showed his bad mood.
"No need for self-introductions, it's a waste of time."
He spoke coldly, his gaze sweeping over the two like a knife, "I am Uchiha Fugaku, a newly promoted Special Jonin. I will lead the team for the rest of the journey."
His gaze first fell on Minato, then softened slightly: "Minato Namikaze, I know you, a commoner genius. I hope you don't use your Body Flicker Technique to escape in actual combat."
Minato was not intimidated by the other party's imposing manner. Instead, he stood up straight and even had the leisure to scratch his head and laugh, "I will try my best not to hold you back, senpai."
"snort."
Fugaku Uchiha snorted coldly, then turned his gaze to Tetsu Nishikawa.
That's the kind of look you give someone who sees something as "cumbersome".
"Nishikawa Toru. Below average chakra reserves, mediocre taijutsu, and aside from his perfect theoretical score and that somewhat flashy shuriken technique, he's utterly useless." Fugaku mercilessly exposed his shortcomings. "To be honest, I don't know what the village was thinking. Bringing you along will significantly lower the team's survival rate."
Faced with such an almost humiliating evaluation from the Uchiha clan, an ordinary child would probably have been filled with shame and indignation, or too frightened to speak.
But Nishikawa Tetsu simply looked calmly at Uchiha Fugaku: "Fugaku-senpai."
"On the battlefield, not everyone needs to charge into battle. Although I don't have much chakra, I am good at intelligence analysis, trap setting, and... a little medical first aid. This should make up for the team's shortcomings."
"Medical?" Fugaku Uchiha raised an eyebrow, clearly disbelieving. "A fresh-graduated genin knows medicine?"
"I know a little about first aid." Nishikawa Tetsu didn't explain further.
At that time, Konoha did not yet have a ninja who knew medical ninjutsu in each ninja squad, as it did in later generations. Therefore, people who knew medical first aid were indeed very helpful.
Fugaku Uchiha stared at Toru Nishikawa for a while, seemingly trying to see fear in the eyes of this commoner boy, but he failed.
Those dark eyes were so calm that he didn't think they belonged to a recent graduate.
"That would be best."
Fugaku Uchiha pulled a small orange toad from his pocket and casually tossed it to Minato Namikaze.
"This is Jiraiya-sama's contact toad. The instructions are simple: depart immediately, cross the border of the Land of Fire, enter the war zone of the Land of Rain, and rendezvous with the main force."
At this point, Fugaku Uchiha's aura suddenly changed, revealing a murderous intent that had settled after he had truly killed people.
He walked up to the two men and, looking down at them, warned them:
"The Iwa and Suna guerrilla forces are operating on the border. Once you're on the battlefield, don't expect me to be your babysitter. If you can't keep up with my speed..."
Fugaku Uchiha paused, his eyes turning cold:
"I will abandon you without hesitation; the Uchiha clan doesn't take burdens with them."
Minato Namikaze stopped smiling and nodded solemnly.
Nishikawa Tetsu glanced down at the few specially made smoke bombs in his ninja tool pouch and thought to himself: Don't worry, when the time comes, it's not certain who will abandon whom.
"Set off!"
At Fugaku Uchiha's command, his figure vanished instantly into the rain.
Minato Namikaze followed closely behind, his golden hair leaving a trail of afterimages in the air.
Nishikawa Tetsu took a deep breath of the moist air and gathered his chakra in the soles of his feet. Although he was not as fast as the previous two, he still followed steadily.
