Chapter 10 Sudden Attack
Chapter 10 Sudden Attack
The darkness that enveloped him was so thick that it was impossible to dissipate.
Anastasia, who jumped off the carriage, did not wander around aimlessly. Confidence does not mean recklessness; she still needed to confirm some things.
She slowly curled her fingers, making sure her dexterity was not affected; whether she had just jumped off the carriage or was moving her fingers, she was perfectly at ease.
Then, Anastasia pricked up her ears and listened carefully to the sounds around her. She heard a series of dull and loud footsteps coming from a distance.
This is not Rupert's footsteps. To reduce discomfort from prolonged walking and standing, Rupert wore soft-soled shoes, and his footsteps did not sound like this.
"I knew that manipulating corpses was such a lewd skill that it was unreliable. It really is useless."
Anastasia's deduction was confirmed; the owner of the footsteps spoke, his voice deep and sounding like that of a tall man.
"I don't hit women, you shorty driving, you come here," the newcomer said arrogantly. "I'm going to punch you into a pulp!"
As he spoke, the heavy, loud footsteps became rapid, indicating that he was running.
"I hope your body is as tough as your mouth!" Rupert roared, charging forward.
Although Rupert was also shrouded in darkness and could not see where the person was, he still went to meet them, as if he were ready to fight them hand to hand.
Anastasia stood still, certain that her hearing was unaffected.
She could hear everything clearly, from their voices to their footsteps, and even the rustling of their clothes as they threw punches.
Soon, a series of muffled thuds of fists hitting flesh reached Anastasia's ears.
The newcomer was a tall, strong man who looked much stronger than Rupert, practically a larger version of him.
Both are Transcendents. Static talents such as height and wingspan may not be an advantage, but Rupert was shrouded in darkness and could not see anything, while the tall and strong newcomer was unaffected.
The newcomer's attack was extremely fierce, with straight punches, hooks, and uppercuts raining down on Rupert like a storm.
Falling into a disadvantageous position, Rupert could only bend his thick arms to block. He couldn't see the direction of the opponent's fist and could only make out the sounds by the faint noises, trying his best to avoid being hit hard.
On one side was a heated boxing match between men, each punch landing with a resounding thud.
On the other side, however, it was extremely quiet. Anastasia was still standing by the carriage, and the lifeless body of the girl lay quietly at her feet.
From the moment the boundless darkness descended, Anastasia began to strategize. By now, she had made her own judgment and analyzed the situation quite thoroughly.
Let's start with the man who had a passionate fight with Rupert. Although he had the upper hand and beat Rupert into retreat, he mainly benefited from his ability to see.
He could attack relentlessly, striking at Rupert's vitals, while Rupert dared not retaliate easily, thus giving him the upper hand.
Anastasia's assessment was: he could be killed, and if he was merely "sadistic," it would be even easier to kill him.
Regarding the enveloping darkness, Anastasia initially thought it was because her space was sealed off, or because it was an alternate dimension created by the mutated power of the Transcendent, which would be very troublesome.
However, it turned out that Anastasia was overthinking it. The streets at midnight were not blocked off, nor were they some kind of alternate dimension; it was simply a matter of being deprived of sight.
Once the location of the person who deprived him of his sight is found, the darkness surrounding him will disappear, and tonight's sudden attack can be averted.
Anastasia is a problem-solving expert; her specialty is solving the problems of those who create them.
This is easier said than done.
Even the transcendent who has been deprived of sight knows that he is the source of darkness, and that as long as he hides far away, the darkness will not disappear.
Anastasia glanced sideways at Mike in the carriage. Although she couldn't see anything, she was confined here to protect Mike. The sightless transcendent didn't appear because his companions had all the advantages. Since that was the case—
Anastasia drew her revolver, cocked the hammer, and aimed the muzzle at the two men engaged in a passionate brawl not far away.
boom!
A shot rang out, but the shooter was not Anastasia.
Anastasia swung her sword—a slender, jet-black blade appeared out of thin air in her hand, cleaving the bullets flying toward her.
Judging from the feel of the bullet as it sliced through the air, the bullet that flew towards her was fired from a rifle. This was bad news, as the gunshot came from a much farther location than expected.
boom!
A second gunshot rang out, and the bullet was deflected by the slender sword just as it got close.
Judging from the intervals between the gunshots, the weapon used by the other party should be a bolt-action rifle with a magazine feed, as a single-shot feed would not have such a fast rate of fire.
If it were Anastasia, she would choose a lever-action rifle for suppressive fire instead of a bolt-action rifle for single-shot bursts, or simply go straight for the kill.
This is good news. Regardless of whether the person who fired the shot was a vision-deprived transcendent, it shows that they did not have the ability to make a decisive move and could not directly kill Anastasia who had lost her sight.
Gunshots rang out one after another, and bullets flew from afar.
Anastasia deflected the incoming bullets one after another; it was far too easy for her, posing no challenge whatsoever.
Just then, a loud shout came from afar.
"Remember! The one who defeated you was Larry Berbick! The strongest man in Gloria!"
The tall attacker was incredibly hot-blooded, but from Anastasia's perspective, he was a villain with some flaws.
Larry Berbick threw a series of punches, his left jab deceiving Rupert's defense, and Berbick's right hook found an opening, striking Rupert's cheek with a powerful uppercut.
With a muffled thud, Rupert Courtney fell straight down.
Prolonged defense inevitably leads to defeat. Rupert, who was at a disadvantage, was on the defensive from the beginning. Larry Berbick's relentless attacks left him exhausted, and it was only a matter of time before he was knocked down.
Logically speaking, the next step should be the fatal blow. Rupert and Berbick are not having a boxing match, but a life-or-death struggle. The one who is standing has the right to deliver a finishing blow to the one who is down, and even beat the other into a pulp.
Anastasia frowned. She didn't want to leave the carriage, nor did she want to reveal her hand too soon. But if she didn't support Rupert, the burly man with the big beard might die.
"Remember! The person who killed you was Larry Berbick! The great Larry Berbick!"
Instead of immediately throwing a punch, Berbick shouted his name loudly again, leaving Anastasia, who was standing by the carriage, completely bewildered.
Although the thoughts and behaviors of the transcendent are very different from those of normal people, his behavior is really brainless. Does he have no brain, or is his brain full of muscles?
Anastasia couldn't understand it, but she was deeply shocked.
Deeply shocked, Anastasia decided to save the people; after all, she had more than one trump card, so what if it was exposed?
boom!
Gunfire erupted again, and this time it was continuous.
To prevent Anastasia from rescuing them, the attackers, hiding in the distance, switched to lever-action rifles, and bullets flew like ink splashes.
If the attackers thought they could stop Anastasia from rescuing people, they were sorely mistaken; the suppressive fire of the lever rifle posed no threat to her whatsoever.
Clang!
The blade rang out, and Anastasia deflected all the incoming bullets.
At the same time, another slender, jet-black sword appeared out of nowhere behind Larry Berbick, aiming straight for his back.
The same method used to kill the cloaked man was employed: a slender sword appeared out of nowhere, piercing the cloaked man's body and penetrating his heart from behind, ending his life.
However, Larry Berbick, whose brains were filled with muscles, was not the cloaked man. He alerted Anastasia's sudden attack and dodged to the right with his muscular body, avoiding the deadly attack of the slender sword.
Although he didn't kill Berbick in one blow, it was enough, because Rupert shakily got up.
"If you and I were in a boxing ring, I would have already lost the match."
Rupert, panting, continued, "But this isn't a boxing match between us. Anyone who tries to harm Master Montague, I'll kill them!"
Before he could finish speaking, Rupert had already thrown a punch at Larry Berbick, who had dodged to the side.
Berbick bent his arm to block the powerful punch, and then launched a counterattack, throwing a hook punch at Rupert's waist and abdomen.
"If I can knock you down once, I can knock you down a second time!"
Larry Berbick's punches became even faster, each strike seemingly delivered with all his might, yet without revealing any weaknesses.
Rupert neither dodged nor evaded, abandoning his previous passive defensive fighting style. He would return the favor if Berbick punched him, seeing who would give in first.
The fight between the two looked very simple and unadorned, without even special effects. It was just a punch-to-punch exchange, no different from a street fight between ordinary people, and perhaps even slightly worse.
However, each of their punches seemed to possess immense power, capable of killing even the strongest adults, or even those who had surpassed their limits.
Fists clashed, producing a series of muffled thuds that sent chills down the spines of those who heard them.
Every exchange of punches between Rupert and Berbick was like a wrestling match between two strong bulls.
On the open ground beside the carriage, Anastasia stood with her sword in hand, the girl's body still lying at her feet, and a few distance away, bullets were scattered all over the ground.
"How much longer can you hold on? Ten minutes, or half an hour?"
Anastasia suddenly spoke, not to Rupert and Berbick who were fighting, nor to Mike in the carriage.
"Maintaining your mutant power must be exhausting. Do you think you'll trap me first, or I'll find you first?"
Anastasia was talking to the person who had taken away her sight.
"You'd better hide well, and don't let me catch you, or I'll kill you."
