Chapter 13 Oppa, you can't lie to me
Su Yu leaned against the bus window, his phone vibrating several times. Messages from Cai Xiubin kept popping up. "Why didn't you come today?" "Boss Park said you took the day off?" "Su Yu?" He typed a few words, then hesitated, then deleted them.
The phone vibrated again. Cai Xiubin: "Where are you?" Su Yu typed a few words: "On the bus." "Where to?" "Dongdaemun." "What are you going there for?" Su Yu stared at the screen for a few seconds, then typed a few words: "To see our company."
The other end replied with a question mark instantly. Su Yu didn't explain, and sent another message: "I just suddenly had a change of heart today." There was no reply for a long time. Su Yu thought she wouldn't reply.
My phone vibrated when the train arrived at the station. "Are you serious?" "Yes." "Send me your address when you arrive."
Su Yu got off the bus and stood under the bus stop sign, sending the address. The dilapidated building was still the same; several tiles were missing from the exterior walls, and the paint on the iron gate was peeling off in patches. Su Yu hadn't been standing at the entrance for long when Cai Xiubin arrived.
She ran from the bus stop, her steps quick, her ponytail swinging behind her head. She reached him, bent over, and panted for a few seconds. When she looked up, her face was flushed, and her eyes were wide open.
"Explain yourself," she said, still catching her breath. "What do you mean by 'coming to see our company'?"
Su Yu didn't speak, but took a piece of paper from his pocket and handed it over. It wasn't a business license; it hadn't been issued yet. It was a receipt from the registration office, stating "Application Completed," and stamped with a seal. He had gone to apply yesterday, and the woman at the window said she would notify him to pick up the certificate in a few days.
Cai Xiubin took the paper and looked down at it. Her gaze swept from the top to the bottom of the paper, and then back again. Then she looked up at him, and then looked down at the paper again. Her finger touched the four characters "Yin-Yang Entertainment," her lips moved slightly, but she didn't make a sound. She turned it over to look at the back; it was empty, so she turned it back.
"Is this yours?" Her voice was a little tense.
"Um."
"You registered a company?"
"Um."
"An entertainment company?"
"Um."
She stared at him for three seconds. Her breathing hadn't completely calmed down; her chest was heaving. She clutched the paper in her hand, neither returning it nor folding it, just holding it there, the edges of the paper wrinkled from her grip.
"Where did you get the money?" she asked in a low voice.
"Earned money."
"How could someone who works at a convenience store earn enough money to start a company?"
"I earned it from my job."
"You're talking nonsense." She said it forcefully, her voice not loud, but each word seemed to be squeezed out from between her teeth. Her eyes reddened, not from the urge to cry, but from the redness of anxiety and anger. "Su Yu, don't lie to me."
"I'm not lying."
She stared into his eyes. He replied. Cai Xiubin blinked, her eyelashes fluttering several times. Her mouth opened and then closed. She held the paper up to the light, glanced at it, and then put it down.
"Do you know how much it costs to start a company?" Her voice trembled.
"Know."
"You knew that, yet you still drove it?"
"Know."
"Where did you get the money?" she asked again, this time in an even lower voice, as if she couldn't bear to hear the answer.
"I found it."
She froze. Not in a funny way, but in a way that made her mind suddenly go blank. She stared at him for several seconds, her pupils dilating slightly. Then the corner of her mouth twitched, and then twitched again.
"Su Yu".
"Um."
"Are you crazy?"
"Maybe."
She didn't laugh. She gripped the paper even tighter. Her knuckles turned white, and the edges of the paper creased even more.
"Why did you start a company?" Her voice finally calmed down, but it was still low.
Su Yu leaned against the doorframe, thinking for a moment. Because I don't want to see you go without any more acting opportunities.
"Your company hasn't been approved yet."
"Soon."
"When is 'soon'?"
"It'll be soon, it'll be soon."
She stared at him for a few seconds. Then her eyes reddened even more. This time it wasn't from anxiety, but from something stuck in her throat. She didn't wipe them away, and blinked.
"You started this company just to sign me?" Her voice changed; it wasn't a question, but a probing "say that again" tone.
"Otherwise what?"
"You don't even know the screenwriters, you don't even know the directors, what makes you think you can sign me?"
"Open it first, then look for it."
"You've got the order wrong."
"The order doesn't matter."
She didn't speak. She stood there, sunlight streaming in through the window, illuminating her profile. She sniffed lightly, as if afraid of being heard. She folded the paper, not just tossing it in, but carefully folding it twice along the edges, slowly, her fingers trembling. Once finished, she put it in her sweatshirt pocket and pressed it down with her hand.
"Su Yu".
"Um."
"If you lie to me, I will be really sad."
"Know."
"You know nothing." She said this, turned and walked away. After a few steps, she stopped, but didn't look back. "Where are the keys?"
Su Yu took a key off the keychain and handed it to her. She took it and held it tightly in her hand. She looked down at the key for several seconds.
"You're really giving it to me?"
"Otherwise what?"
She didn't speak. She put the keys in her pocket, folding them together with the piece of paper. She left, this time without looking back. Her steps were hurried, clattering on the concrete, as if she were running away from something.
Su Yu stood on the empty first floor, sunlight streaming in, dust still swirling in the air. He picked up the broom and swept a few times, but it wasn't clean enough, so he gave up.
That night, Su Yu lay in bed when her phone lit up. Cai Xiubin had sent a photo. It was of her refrigerator door, the receipt pasted on it, all four corners pressed flat with her fingers. Next to it was the key, taped to the receipt. Below it was a line of text: "All done. I've left the key here too. If you run away, I'll slap both of these in your face."
Su Yu looked at the screen and typed a few words: "Is the refrigerator door clean?"
She replied instantly: "You still have the nerve to care about the refrigerator door?" Then she replied again: "Su Yu".
"Um."
"Don't run away."
"I won't run."
"You said it."
"Um."
He rolled over, and the rubber band under the pillow poked his ear. It was Shirley's; she'd said, "Hold this for me," and then never asked for it back. He took it out, looked at it, and then put it back. The key was on Cai Xiubin's refrigerator, the rubber band was under the pillow, and the license hadn't come through yet. But he wasn't in a hurry. Soon.
