Chapter 53, Lesson 1
Chapter 53, Lesson 1
Ryan retrieved dozens of lucky red hats from the ravines of the battlefield ruins and used binding charms to fix them to a section of abandoned tunnel in the underground castle. This tunnel was probably originally used for storage, and the passageway was quite spacious.
The reason there are so many red hats is because red hats are accustomed to living in places where blood has been shed.
The place he went to buy goods last night was called Verdun, one of the bloodiest meat grinders in modern warfare history, and also one of the battles in which the French fought to the bitter end without surrendering and achieved a strategic victory, without foreigners, dwarfs, or young girls leading the way.
Ryan inflicted various abnormal statuses on these red hats, such as weakness, powerlessness, and confusion, making them unable to win even in a one-on-one fight against an eleven or twelve-year-old wizard, and also restricting their free movement.
"Young people should always be given a chance to hone their skills." Feeling that everything was in order, Ryan headed to the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, where his beloved students should already be.
Inside the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom.
The first-year Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs waited patiently for Professor Lane.
Because of Ryan's high reputation at Hufflepuff School, the badgers were all looking forward to their new professor's first lesson.
The little lions, on the other hand, were eager to try something new, not targeting anyone in particular, but determined to teach all the professors a lesson.
If they don't show the professor what they've got, the professor will think they're incredibly capable.
A knock sounded at the door, and everyone found their acting professor standing there.
Ryan said, "Bring your wands, but don't bring your books. Follow me to the castle tunnels; this lesson is an outdoor practical session."
This is a teaching method that doesn't require lesson preparation, and you can't prepare lessons anyway, because no one can predict unexpected events in the classroom.
All the students erupted in cheers, showing great interest in any teaching method that didn't require sitting in a classroom, and they all grabbed their wands and followed behind Ryan.
On the way, they encountered several late students hurrying along. These students, whose grade was unknown, looked on with envy when they saw the first-year wizard following behind Ryan.
And Peeves, who ran away as fast as he could after seeing Ryan, caught the eye of a few clever little wizards.
A group of people arrived at the underground section. At the entrance to the abandoned tunnel, Ryan addressed the students: "First, let me introduce myself. My name is Ryan Wells, and I'm temporarily taking over Professor Quirrell's Defense Against the Dark Arts class, as he is currently recovering from his injuries. You can call me Professor or Ryan in class, and Senior Ryan or Ryan after class. There's no need to call me Professor Wells."
"Okay, Ryan," Neville replied earnestly.
"Class is in session, Mr. Longbottom. You can call me Ryan or Professor."
"Oh, I'm sorry, Professor Wells," Neville said, somewhat bewildered.
"He's a professor."
"Yes, Professor Wells."
The young wizards burst into laughter.
Ryan sighed and gestured to the young wizards not to laugh too loudly, lest they turn Defense Against the Dark Arts class into a comedy show.
"That concludes my self-introduction. For those who want to know more about me, my advice is to focus on your studies and improve yourself. Don't waste your energy on focusing on others."
"Now, let's begin the lesson."
Ryan quietly cast a silencing spell, quieting the chattering little wizards, and nodded with satisfaction: "It seems everyone is quite supportive of my teaching. I'm glad everyone quieted down so quickly."
He ignored the students who kept trying to speak and make strange movements, secretly regretting that he couldn't use the petrification spell to petrify these restless little wizards.
"Now, I have a question. Professor Quirrell must have already led you through 'Dark Magic: A Guide to Self-Defense' during your class. Now, can anyone tell me what a red hat is?"
He asked the question without any expectation.
Sure enough, only Hermione raised her hand.
"Very well, then Miss Granger, please answer this question." Ryan dispelled the silence spell.
"The Red Hat is a mischievous little creature that looks like a fairy. It is not very big and likes to play pranks and cause trouble. It usually lives in dark, bloody places, such as the dungeons of castles and the trenches of battlefield ruins, and ambushes lost people."
"Good answer, one point for Gryffindor." Ryan nodded. "So, does anyone know how to deal with Red Hat?"
This time, no one, including Hermione, raised their hand, because it wasn't mentioned in the book.
"You can use any spell, as long as it can repel the danger." Ryan shook his head. These students had taught him a lesson. Did they think that only specially invented spells could harm magical creatures?
"It seems everyone's understanding of Defense Against the Dark Arts is too one-sided," he said, his voice amplified by magic and echoing underground. "The so-called Defense Against the Dark Arts is simply to give you the ability to protect yourself when facing danger, nothing more."
"Therefore, this ability is not limited to the knowledge learned in any course, whether it is spells or transfiguration, potions or herbalism, or even the most basic fist and foot techniques. As long as this knowledge and ability are used to protect yourself well, that is Defense Against the Dark Arts."
Hermione pushed her way through the crowd and stood at the front: "Professor, can we understand it as Defense Against the Dark Arts class training our ability to deal with crises?"
"You could say that, Miss Granger. Because the defense against dark magic isn't about the dark magic described in the defense books, but rather about dealing with dark wizards or dangerous magical creatures who might use dark magic to harm you."
"Therefore, most of my classes from now on will be outdoor practical courses."
Ryan affirmed Hermione's understanding and then proceeded to paint a rosy picture for the young wizards. He wouldn't tell them that "the majority" could be a figurative expression, and that attending a practical class once a week could also be considered the majority.
After all, in some Muggle schools, even if there is only one physical education class a week or not at all, it can still be called a school that focuses on students' physical fitness and offers a variety of outdoor activities.
The first-year wizards were filled with excitement and joy upon hearing this.
"Professor, is today's lesson about practicing how to deal with red hats?"
"Where is the red hat? I've never seen a live red hat before."
Ryan stepped aside, opened the door to the tunnel behind him, and a chilling aura wafted out. He said, "Listen up, everyone. I've placed fifty specially treated red hats in the tunnel. You can get one academy point for knocking one out. Multiple people can cooperate."
He repeated, "Multiple people can work together. Especially inter-college collaboration; the red hats produced will be graded by both colleges. You can go inside now; you have one and a half hours. I will provide feedback after the practice."
After he finished speaking, he snapped his fingers, and fifty iron cages appeared at the entrance, extending all the way out from the tunnel gate.
Just as the young wizards were about to go inside, Hermione suddenly stepped forward and blocked the doorway.
