Chapter 26 You ran into him yourself
Chapter 26 You ran into him yourself
As a mystery detective who had stayed indoors since moving into the apartment, focusing solely on his research into magic, Jaeger had no idea what his neighbors had been saying about him these past few days.
He only knew that he had suffered a great loss last time because he was in a hurry with the [Wizard] card, so he wanted to take advantage of the time before the second round of drawing the main card to master as much knowledge and spells as possible from the most important active card he currently had.
After all, it is common knowledge that knowing something and being able to use it skillfully are two different things.
Even though Jaeger now possesses theoretical knowledge of mysticism and a large number of spells, enough to probably take an adult wizard qualification exam—if such a thing even exists—if he were to encounter an emergency, unless the opponent was as confident and gullible as the fake one from last time, Jaeger would likely still suffer due to his low proficiency in using magic.
So this is the source of the strange images that the nearby residents have seen in the past few days.
It was neither a ghost nor a hallucination; it was simply Jaeger practicing his magic.
Well, of course, practicing magic isn't always smooth sailing; sometimes unexpected things happen...
Take, for example, a minor accident a few days ago. Jaeger was trying to practice the Levitation Spell, but he targeted the wrong object and accidentally hit the apartment floor with all the spells.
The amount of magic required for the levitation spell should normally not have caused any major problems.
Unfortunately, Jaeger didn't realize that all his magic had gone astray and landed on the ground. He thought he had mispronounced the incantation, so he stubbornly kept using it, reciting it more than ten times...
So the already heavy apartment building started to float up due to the excessive levitation spell, scaring nearby residents who came out to throw away their trash.
And if this bizarre action hadn't triggered a game achievement, Jaeger might not have even realized the problem:
[A new achievement has been unlocked!]
[Achievement Completed - "Up"]
[Unlock condition: Make your house fly in some way.]
[PS: Holy crap, someone actually managed to achieve this? What kind of mentality drives players to make their houses fly?]
Jaeger at that time: ?
Say it again, what flew up?
Startled, he rushed out the door and managed to get the apartment back in place just before it completely soared into the sky above Crime Alley, securing a spot on the front page of tomorrow's Gotham Daily.
In conclusion, although there were many unexpected events in the process, Jaeger at least achieved his goal.
He is now proficient in most common spells, having basically mastered them to the point where he can summon objects with a wave of his hand and casually cast freezing and fire spells.
Of these, Jaeger focused most on practicing defensive and offensive spells.
The former is the strongest shield, the latter the sharpest spear!
Now, if he encounters a counterfeit again, even if the other party is on guard against him, Jaeger dares to say that he can end the battle within a minute in at least eight different ways.
The level 2 Wizard is so simple and easy to use.
Of course, Jaeger sometimes wondered where his magical level in this world really stood. Was he really just a "normal adult wizard" as described in the card description? If we disregard the cost, then the magical community in this world was practically superior from the start—it was too overpowered.
However, Jaeger hasn't met any other people in the magical world yet, so there's no way to make a comparison.
Having probably mastered most of the normal spells, Jaeger soon had the idea of exploring other uses for magic.
For example, you can use the Fire Spell and the Water Spell together to quickly create a fog that can block your vision... This way you won't have to keep calling out the messenger as an assistant, since summoning a messenger also takes time.
For example, the spell of the Flying Spell could be rewritten to create a Disarm Spell with a similar principle but potentially better results in actual combat.
This was much easier than researching innovative ideas for a graduation thesis. Jaeger could use magic to manifest his strange ideas and quickly became engrossed in them...
Perhaps he was so engrossed that Jaeger forgot about the potential safety hazards of studying magic.
So this is why Jaeger tried to create a spell that could produce an explosive effect, but ended up being blown out of his house and is now forced to stay at the Tompkins Clinic for treatment.
Well, at least the explosive effect was achieved, but the power will need to be controlled a bit in the future...
Jaeger was still reviewing the incident in his mind, showing no sign of making a mistake but not correcting it, even though he was now wincing in pain as Dr. Leslie was pulling him to disinfect his wound.
"So," Leslie asked, taking out a brand-new roll of bandage and wrapping it around an extra wound on Jaeger's arm, "young man, what kind of experiment are you conducting that could cause such a commotion?"
Her gaze lingered on Jaeger's wounds: "You've inflicted so many wounds on yourself."
Jaeger hissed, "Ouch, ouch, ouch... It was really an accident, Doctor. I just had a sudden thought, I just wanted to know what would happen if I put grapes in the microwave..."
Leslie: "..."
Believe it or not, Leslie really knew what was going to happen.
She happened to have read a paper published in PNAS that described how heating grapes in a microwave oven could produce plasma jets and even extremely dangerous explosions.
And Jaeger actually dared to conduct this kind of experiment in his own home?!
So she tightened the bandage around his hand without hesitation, successfully causing Jaeger's expression to contort for a moment: "...Don't take your life for granted, young man. You dare to do something so dangerous at home?"
"It won't happen again next time."
"You want a next time?" Leslie glared at Yager. "Maybe next time something happens, you won't see me anymore; you'll be lying in Gotham Central Hospital!"
What's wrong with young people these days? One after another, they don't care about their own lives. Some are giving up being the richest man in the world to become vigilantes, while others are just playing with bombs in their own homes because they have nothing better to do!
This silver-haired female doctor was extremely intimidating when she got angry, completely unlike her usual kind doctor demeanor. She successfully made Jaeger shrink back and immediately dare not utter a sound.
The clinic fell silent instantly. Leslie carefully treated Jaeger's wound, and couldn't help but remind him of some precautions against conducting dangerous experiments at home.
Jaeger dared not refute Leslie, whose aura at that moment resembled that of a high school homeroom teacher, and nodded repeatedly to indicate that he understood.
Seeing that Jaeger was behaving quite obediently, Leslie's expression finally softened as he recalled the many rumors circulating about the young man in front of him these past few days.
"By the way, young man, I haven't asked your name yet."
"Jaeger Winchester, just call me Jaeger, Dr. Leslie." Jaeger looked at the neatly bandaged arm. "Thank you for your help. How much will the treatment cost?"
—Although he was penniless when he first arrived in this world, Jaeger found his identity documents and driver's license, as well as a bank card with enough balance to live on for a month, when he moved into the apartment, so he could afford to pay for the time being.
Leslie shook his head: "It was nothing, so I don't need to pay you... but you have to promise me you won't do this again, Jaeger."
"I understand, Doctor," Jaeger apologized sincerely.
He definitely won't do that kind of thing again... at least not in his own home.
How about we find some time to wander around Gotham and see if there's any suitable place for me to study magic?
Just as Jaeger was pondering this matter, the clinic door was suddenly slammed open with a loud bang, which was exceptionally clear in the quiet clinic at that moment.
Jaeger instinctively looked in the direction of the sound, but couldn't help frowning when he saw who it was.
He was a tall, brooding man with a hyena-like ferocity in his eyes—people like him are everywhere in Gotham, especially in Crime Alley…and they have a common name: desperate criminals.
"Hand over the money," the man said hoarsely, pulling a gun straight from inside his coat and pointing it at Jaeger and Leslie.
His mental state seemed very unstable; he may have just taken drugs. His hand holding the gun trembled, and he spoke incoherently: "Hurry up!... What are you standing there for, damn it!... I'm going to shoot!"
