Chapter 31 The Fear of the Sorting Hat
Chapter 31 The Fear of the Sorting Hat
In the lounge next to the auditorium, the freshmen were waiting for Professor McGonagall's return, and many had resigned themselves to the fate of taking the exam.
After all, one person might feel anxious before an exam if they haven't studied, but when they know that most people haven't studied either, giving up becomes a source of collective joy.
"How many times do I have to say 'quiet' today?" Professor McGonagall appeared at the doorway, staring at the students in the lounge like a homeroom teacher.
The shadows of the past resurfaced in his mind, giving the usually calm and composed Chu Yang a jolt.
"Now line up and get ready to head to the Great Hall, where you will complete your Sorting Ceremony."
Under Professor McGonagall's sharp gaze, the freshmen quickly stood up.
They quickly lined up and obediently followed behind Professor McGonagall.
Professor McGonagall led the new students out of the side door and towards the main hall. As they approached, the door opened automatically, and the group entered the magnificent hall.
There are four rows of long tables in the hall, each occupied by one of the four colleges, while at the very top there is a smaller long table, which is for the teachers.
Thousands of candles floated in the air above the auditorium, illuminating it as if it were daytime.
On both sides are statues with braziers burning brightly.
The ceiling was enchanted, turning into the appearance of night, with occasional stars appearing, giving the illusion of dining outdoors.
Chu Yang was somewhat amazed when he first saw the auditorium, but his thoughts were quickly replaced by other ideas.
"It would be better to replace the candles with LED lights with adjustable color temperature. The candle light is unstable, quite dazzling, and also makes the view from the ceiling look much lower."
As amazing as it may seem, Chu Yang, who was gradually becoming familiar with Hogwarts, felt that the development here was becoming increasingly detached from the Muggle world.
The magical world is like a stubborn old man, conservative and afraid of change, stagnating with an air of decay, while the Muggle world has already boarded the train of the times and is moving forward rapidly.
Chu Yang was well aware of the enormous changes that technology would bring to the world in the next twenty years. If this generation of young wizards did not make changes, the status between wizards and Muggles might be completely altered.
Lost in thought, Chu Yang suddenly felt someone watching him. He looked in the direction of the gaze and saw Dumbledore sitting in the center of the teachers' seats.
This wise and powerful old wizard, the most prestigious in the magical world, was looking at Chu Yang with curiosity.
Not far from him, Professor Sprout, a herbalist, was also waving at Chu Yang.
And she kept pointing at herself with her finger.
What do you mean?
Does this mean I should choose Hufflepuff?
Chu Yang stared wide-eyed, looking completely bewildered.
This made Sprout extremely anxious; he almost stood up and shouted.
"Cough cough." Dumbledore coughed quickly upon seeing this.
He signaled to Sprout to be careful, and the latter could only back down and sit properly.
However, this little incident caught the attention of Professor Snape, who was standing next to Dumbledore.
His attention was originally focused on Harry Potter...
Besides Snape, Quirinus Quirrell, who was possessed by Voldemort, was also observing Chu Yang.
To be precise, it was Voldemort within him that was stirring.
In front of the teacher's table was a four-legged stool with a worn-out pointed hat on it, patched up here and there.
It's hard to believe that this is the Sorting Hat, which embodies the ideas of the four founders of Hogwarts!
As Professor McGonagall led the freshmen to the Sorting Hat, the Great Hall fell into an unusual silence, for everyone knew what was about to happen.
Before the Sorting Ceremony begins, Headmaster Dumbledore has a few words to say to everyone.
As soon as Professor McGonagall finished speaking, the elderly Dumbledore stood up and spoke. He didn't say much, but mainly focused on two points: reminding the new students not to enter the Forbidden Forest next door, and also about the corridor on the right side of the third floor.
Chu Yang wasn't really interested in the corridor on the right side of the third floor. Even if Dumbledore hadn't reminded him, Chu Yang wouldn't have planned to go there.
But forest bans...
That's a great place to make money. Not even Dumbledore, let alone the King of Heaven himself, could stop Chu Yang.
"Now, whoever hears your name, step forward. I will place the Sorting Hat on their head and then decide which house they will go to." Professor McGonagall lifted the Sorting Hat, her eyes fixed on the list in her hand, ready to read out the names.
"Is it really that easy to get assigned to a hospital?"
"What happened to the exam, Hermione?"
"Good heavens, as long as there's no exam, it doesn't matter how I grade it."
As the freshmen whispered among themselves, Professor McGonagall began calling roll. The first on the list was Hannah Abbott, the future owner of the Leaky Cauldron.
As the saying goes, the main characters come and go, but Hannah remains a constant.
When Chu Yang heard her name, he suddenly remembered this famous saying that had been passed down for a long time.
"Hufflepuff!"
As Chu Yang was still reflecting, Professor McGonagall's voice reached his ears.
"Chu Yang!"
Chu Yang took a deep breath and stepped out of the crowd.
As a transmigrator who didn't belong to this world, Chu Yang felt a lot of pressure when facing the Sorting Hat.
Because he was unsure of the extent to which the Sorting Hat's Legilimency could achieve.
Is it only possible to read superficial personality traits?
Or is it possible to directly access memories?
Chu Yang had considered trying to avoid the Sorting Hat part, but when he noticed Dumbledore watching him, he immediately abandoned the idea.
Trying to outsmart the greatest wizard of our time is not a wise choice.
A sudden weight on his head brought Chu Yang back to his senses. He realized that the Sorting Hat was already on his head, and he could only pray that the Sorting Hat's effect wasn't as strong as he had imagined.
On the other hand, the Sorting Hat, upon landing on Chu Yang's head, detected nothing and felt as if it had been placed on a rock.
This surprised the Sorting Hat greatly. In its thousand-year history, this was the first time it had encountered such a situation. Could it be that it had fallen into disrepair? But that was impossible. It had signed a contract with the entire Hogwarts. The Book of Admission and the Pen of Acceptance, those two silent things, were still intact. How could it possibly break down first?
Just when the Sorting Hat was about to go all out and intensify its efforts...
It sensed a palace that was both ethereal and unreal.
That building is even more magnificent and imposing than Hogwarts!
Then, something vaguely emerged...
throne!
Countless thrones!
When it wants to figure something out!
Whether the throne is dilapidated or intact, it exudes an unstoppable power!
Nearly a hundred thrones were crowded with people!
The figures suddenly opened their eyes and stared coldly at the Sorting Hat.
In reality, the Sorting Hat suddenly let out a terrifying howl!
