Chapter 229 The Aura of Death
Raphael used "travel" to take Audrey, Fors, and Emlyn to a wasteland in southern Backlund.
This place is located between Backlund and Pulitzer Bay. The surrounding area is relatively flat, but there are not many people, and no one has come to cultivate it.
Raphael inquired in the surrounding villages and learned that a long time ago, the church did not allow people to cultivate wasteland and graze livestock in the area, and over time, few people went there anymore.
The winter wind blew through the weeds and branches around them, but Raphael and the others didn't feel cold at all; they had long since passed the stage of being afraid of the cold or heat of nature.
Upon arriving at the location of this operation, Raphael pointed to a ruin in the distance and said, "That was once the castle of a nobleman in Rune, but that nobleman was wiped out by the allied forces of the Southern Continent during the Pale Age."
"I learned of the existence of this relic from a notebook belonging to the last member of this noble family."
"I explored this place a few days ago. Based on the notes, I found the entrance and explored it briefly."
"The environment inside the ruins is quite different from what is recorded in the notebook, so the notebook may have played a very limited role."
"However, the reason I still decided to explore this place is because I'm fairly certain that the 'vengeful spirit' attribute I need is still within the ruins."
Fors and Emlyn nodded slowly, but Audrey asked Raphael, "Are you ready to advance to Sequence 5?"
'
Raphael smiled. "Just making some preparations in advance."
Audrey carefully observed Raphael's expression and knew that he was truly about to be promoted.
This promotion speed is just too fast!
Raphael then led everyone to the entrance, which was a small, unremarkable mound. Raphael used "Teleport" to take them inside the mound in three separate trips.
The ability to "teleport" is not like "travel"; you can only teleport with one person at a time.
The "Travel" at Sequence 5 level can only take two people with it through the spirit world. However, since Fors, one of the four people, can also travel through the spirit world, the four of them were able to use "Travel" together to reach their destination.
Inside the mound, there was a downward staircase.
Raphael explained, "This was the entrance to the ruins built by that noble family. It was originally built on a small hill. When the allied forces from the Southern Continent attacked, they realized they were powerless to resist, so they blew up this entrance."
"So now, you can't find the entrance from the outside; you can only find a downward passage."
Audrey removed her veil and, along with Fors and Emlyn, followed Raphael down the steps. After walking for a while, and reaching deep underground, the steps ended, revealing a vast space with many ruins visible inside.
It's as if a huge city was once built in this underground space.
Emlyn smiled and said, "If there's no danger here, it's definitely a place vampires love to stay."
.
Mysterious, without sunlight, undisturbed.
Raphael chuckled, "If you resolve the dangers here in the future, you could build a secret base here."
Emlyn nodded. "Good idea."
At that moment, a faint light appeared ahead. Raphael said, "We're about to enter the ruins. Everyone, please keep your voices down."
Continuing forward, Audrey and the others saw red flowers on the ground, which looked like they were made of strips of silk.
These are spider lilies!
These spider lilies are everywhere, emitting a faint glow, making this underground world not seem dark.
The four of them waded through the spider lilies and walked forward. Audrey felt that the scene was magical and interesting. Ancient buildings were faintly visible all around them, and spider lilies bloomed between the buildings, emitting a faint light. This was the extraordinary adventure she had always wanted.
If it weren't for the fact that Susie had to stay in the office to cover for her, she would have liked to bring Susie here with her.
After advancing quietly for a distance, Raphael made a gesture, and the four of them hid together behind a broken wall.
From where they were hiding, they could see the street in the ruins ahead. Only the sides of the street were covered with spider lilies, but there were none in the middle.
Raphael whispered, "Wait a moment."
About a minute later, Audrey and the others suddenly seemed to sense something and looked towards the streets in the ruins.
Three figures appeared at one end of the street, striding forward with brisk steps.
Soon, Audrey and the others were able to see the three people clearly by the faint light of the spider lily.
They were three dark-skinned, mummified corpses dressed in exotic clothing and wielding long-handled weapons, walking briskly forward.
These three dried corpses weren't of a very high level, but Raphael showed no intention of making a move—Audrey and the other two Sequence 5s didn't notice a detail: they were all waiting for Raphael's signal.
It wasn't because Raphael initiated the operation, or because he was the one who knew the area best.
Rather, it was out of some subconscious trust. Fors had followed Raphael's orders before and had a good experience, so he automatically regarded Raphael as the person in charge of this operation.
Audrey and Emlyn actually lacked experience in such extraordinary collective actions, but they knew very well that Raphael was more reliable in this regard.
Therefore, when they needed to make a decision on the spot, they would wait for Raphael's signal.
After the three dried corpses had quickly passed by on the street ahead, Raphael whispered, "Neither the spider lily nor the dried corpses are things that weren't mentioned in the notes I found."
"I imagine that during the 'Pale Era,' the allied forces of the Southern Continent must have discovered this ruin and made some preparations."
Audrey and the other two nodded slowly, finding the guess quite reasonable.
Raphael added, "Last time I came alone and didn't attack them. This time we should kill a few mummies and see if they have any clues. We should also see how this underground ruin reacts."
"If there is danger, retreat immediately. If nothing changes, we can continue forward."
Audrey and the other two had no objections and were about to chase after the three mummies when Raphael told them that these mummies were like patrolling guards, and every five or six minutes or so, a group of three would come out from one end of the street.
So they waited a while longer, discussed their tactics, and a few minutes later, sure enough, three more "dried corpse guards" appeared from one end of the street and walked quickly toward them.
Raphael watched them silently, and once the three mummies entered his attack range, he attempted to transform them into living corpses under his control, as planned.
Little did he know that the moment his spirit touched the three dried corpses, he trembled violently, and a symbol of a skull wearing a strange crown suddenly appeared before his eyes.
That represents "Death"!
The dried corpse actually exuded the aura of death!
